Exhaust emissions of the new Mercedes-Benz V6 engines as measured in the European driving cycle are up to 50 percent lower than the current EU limit value (Emission Directive, stage 2) while in the US test they are up to 50 percent below the stringent hydrocarbon limits of California's LEV ("low-emission vehicle") legislation. The example of the US test cycle illustrates the high effectiveness of the exhaust purification system which exceeds 97 percent.

Mercedes-Benz New V6 engines with intake module
The exemplary torque characteristics have been achieved with the help of a newly developed intake module. The technology behind it: on the inside of the intake module there is a flap which enables the lengths of the intake pipes to be varied depending on engine speed. If the engine has to develop high performance at a high engine speed, the flap will open at around 3,700/min allowing the air directly to enter the cylinders. At lower engine speeds, the flap of the intake module closes, lengthening the intake pipes and building up pressure waves which assist the intake process and substantially improve the torque yield in this engine speed range.
