  • Gottlieb Daimler registers his "self-propelling fire pump" at the Imperial Patent Office (patent no. DRP 46 779 of 15 April, 1889). This vehicle causes a considerable stir on its presentation at a fire brigades open day in Hanover.

  • From the yard of the Daimler factory on the Seelberg hill in Cannstatt, Leipzig bookseller Dr Friedrich Hermann Wölfert sets off in his motorised airship. It is propelled by a Daimler single-cylinder engine, producing 2 hp / 1.5 kW at 700 rpm. This maiden flight of a motorised airship ends in Kornwestheim, about four kilometres away.

  • Bertha Benz and her two sons, Eugen and Richard, together undertake the first long-distance journey in automotive history. Aboard "Model 3", the series version of the Patent Motor Car, they drive from Mannheim to Pforzheim via Heidelberg, Bruchsal and Durlach – a total distance of about 100 kilometres. After spending five days in Pforzheim the trio returns to Mannheim via Bretten and Bruchsal.

  • Carl Benz gives a public demonstration of his Patent Motor Car at the Munich Exhibition of Engines and Working Machines. The "Model 3” he presents in Munich is the world’s first series-built petrol automobile and is awarded the Gold Medal.

  • Piano manufacturer William Steinway and Gottlieb Daimler together found the Daimler Motor Company with headquarters in Long Island City, New York/USA. Daimler’s contribution to the joint company included his patent licences for the USA.

  • The "Schwäbische Kronik" reports on the previous day's test drive in the "Daimler Motor Car, the new tram". Fitted with a 4 hp / 3 kW single-cylinder engine, this motor car owned by the "Stuttgarter Pferdeeisenbahn-Gesellschaft" (Horsedrawn Tramway Company) can carry up to 20 passengers.
