  • At Nutzfahrzeug Ludwigsfelde GmbH, a Mercedes-Benz 814 light-duty truck from the LN 2 series is the first Mercedes-Benz truck to come off the assembly line on the territory of the former German Democratic Republic. Established in January by the Treuhand privatisation agency, the company produces Mercedes-Benz trucks there initially on a contract basis. The landmark vehicle is officially presented to Brandenburg's Minister President Manfred Stolpe by Mercedes-Benz Board of Management Chairman Prof. Werner Niefer.

  • On the basis of a draft scheme put forward by Group company Dornier GmbH in Friedrichshafen, Daimler-Benz begins development work on a fuel cell unit that can be used as the drive system for an electric vehicle. Just three years later, Daimler-Benz is able to present its first milestone with this new drive technology in the form of the NECAR (New Electric Car) research vehicle.

  • The new 140-series S-Class with models 300 SE/SEL, 400 SE/SEL, 500 SE/SEL and 600 SE/SEL makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The top-of-the-range 600 SE and 600 SEL models are the first Mercedes-Benz production cars equipped with a twelve-cylinder engine, the 300 kW / 408 hp 6-litre V12 M 120. Featuring a host of technical innovations, the new S-Class saloon also launches a stylistically new interpretation of the traditional Mercedes radiator grille, the so-called integrated radiator with star mounted on the engine hood. Additionally, it paves the way for innovative environmental technology: during its development the S-Class was consistently designed for recyclability, the use of recycled materials, and the complete avoidance of environmentally harmful chlorofluorocarbons.   • Mercedes-Benz presents a new commercial vehicle engine range under its LEV (Low Emission Vehicle) concept at the Hanover Trade Fair. These engines already meet the European EURO 1 emission standard that will come into effect in autumn 1993. The new range of low-pollution engines fitted with turbocharger and intercooler comprises the OM 401 LA V6 power plant, the OM 402 LA V8 and the OM 366 LA in-line six-cylinder.

  • Mercedes-Benz AG and the US company Diesel Technology Corporation (DTC) agree the joint development and production of an electronic injection system for commercial vehicle diesel engines. The goal is to meet the stringent American emission standards scheduled to take effect in 1994 and 1998, while getting the lowest possible fuel consumption. DTC, a subsidiary of Penske Transportation, is a manufacturer of diesel injection systems.
