  • In Freiburg Baden-Württemberg's transport minister Hermann Schaufler takes delivery of a Mercedes-Benz 1517 hybrid truck. When used in urban areas, the truck will be powered by an almost silent 46 kW / 63 hp electric motor. In rural areas the truck switches to its second drive system, a 125 kW / 170 hp diesel engine with reduced emissions and noise. The parallel arrangement of the two drives also permits combined operation with 171 kW / 233 hp.

  • The new light Vito van (638 series), crowned "Van of the Year 1996" a little earlier, is displayed to the public at the Geneva Commercial Vehicle Show, where the coveted award is presented. The refined trucks from the new Light Class also make their debut. The most important innovations are the OM 904 LA ECO POWER engines – turbocharged four-cylinder in-line engines with intercooler and three-valve technology, the first units of the new OM 900 engine family to be introduced. Other new products include the all-wheel-drive version of the Sprinter and a natural gas powered variant of the van, presented as a prototype with the designation Sprinter 314 G. Also designed for natural gas operation is the 1820 G medium-duty truck, whose 160 kW / 218 hp engine enables reduced exhaust and noise emissions compared with the basic engine with the same power rating.   • The Research Division of Daimler-Benz presents another car with fuel cell drive at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. NECAR II (New Electric Car) based on the V-Class derives its energy from the controlled reaction of hydrogen and oxygen gas, in which electricity is generated. The weight and volume of the fuel cell have been reduced to such an extent that virtually the entire interior compartment of the car is available to passengers and their luggage.

  • Markus Oestreich notches up the first win of the season for Mercedes-Benz in the second run of the Super Race Trucks at the Autodromo di Santamonica in Italy. Since the start of the season the team has used the Evolution version of the Mercedes-Benz 1834 S race truck with a larger-displacement V6 diesel engine.

(San Antonio, Texas/USA). This precipitates a joint venture in which Dornier GmbH has a 20 % and Fairchild Aircraft an 80 % holding. This step represents a retreat on the part of Daimler-Benz Aerospace from direct involvement in the regional aircraft sector after financial support for Fokker was discontinued in January.

The industrial management of the Diesel Engines Division is transferred to Mercedes-Benz AG.

  • Mercedes-Benz presents the O 405 NÜH hybrid bus, which features electric hub drive, a sodium-nickel chloride high-capacity battery and a low-emission diesel engine. The first four units of the environment-friendly low-floor bus take up regular service between Oberstdorf, Sonthofen and Kempten in January 1997. They are being tested in everyday operation as part of a pilot project initiated by the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Protection. The electric traction battery is used only for zero-emission, noiseless operation in downtown areas; in rural areas the 184 kW / 250 hp diesel takes over, functioning as a generator for the wheel hub motors and to recharge the traction battery.

The Vario large-capacity van and the new O 550 Integro rural service bus series also make their debut. Other new models are the O 405 NÜL, a longer-wheelbase version of the proven low-floor rural service bus, and a natural gas powered variant of the short low-floor O 405 NK regular service bus. Also on display is the Innovisia bus design study with Active Body Control (ABC) active suspension and numerous other innovative features. With the Setra S 315 GT- HD, EvoBus presents the first high-deck bus from the combined-service family, which comes to be favoured by many coach operators as economical alternative. The 15-metre rural service bus S 319 UL also has its premiere, thereby establishing a new segment for Setra.
