Daimler motor carriage, 1886. 
This vehicle - a carriage without horses, propelled by an invisible energy source - marked the beginning of a revolution in transport. The power came from the new small engine developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Following the motor cycle and a motor boat the motoristion of the carriage provided further proof of the versality of Daimler's invention. Together with the Benz Patent Motor Car the motor carriage laid the foundation for the development of the automobile.

A special problem is the cooling of the Daimler Universal Engine. The single-cylinder is provided with a particularly thick-walled cylinder and cylinder head, which is not very helpful in view of the loads caused by the driving operation. A remedy for this is the tubular radiator at the rear of the motor carriage. Its cooling water evaporates and therefore has to be replenished frequently.

For installing the Daimler single-cylinder engine into the carriage, an appropriate power transfer is required. Hence, the engine is connected to a two-speed gearwheel transmission via a friction clutch, the driven gearwheels of which can be displaced on their axle. Leather discs clamped between small pinions are substitutes for a differential. The corresponding toothed rings are mounted on the inner side of the rear wheels.
