- Description: The A-Class Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde design and equipment lines are on display for the first time at the International Frankfurt Motor Show. In the C-Class (202 series), the C 220 Turbodiesel is presented alongside the new top-of-the-range V8 C 43 AMG. The turbodiesel is fitted with the 2.2-litre four-cylinder OM 611 unit with innovative common-rail direct injection. E-Class (210 series) models presented include the V6 E 240, V8 E 430 and E 55 AMG. All five new models are available in saloon and estate variants, although the E 55 AMG Estate is not introduced until spring 1998. The E 430, C 43 AMG and E 55 AMG are the first models to be equipped with the V8 engines from the M 113 series, which feature three-valve technology and dual ignition. The V-Class (638 series) is also boosted by the new top-of-the-range 128 kW / 174 hp V 280. In addition to the new models introduced into the product range, Daimler-Benz also presents a further milestone in the development of automotive power units for the future. Based on the A-Class, the NECAR 3 (New Electric Car) is the world’s first vehicle to be powered by fuel cells and fitted with an onboard hydrogen generator. Another research vehicle enjoying its world premiere in Frankfurt is the F 300 Life-Jet study, a three-wheeled open-top leisure car with active suspension.
