  • On behalf of business partner Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach rents the garden room of the former Hotel Hermann in Cannstatt, where he continues his design work with twelve workers and five apprentices. He starts out by developing the Phoenix engine, which features two upright cylinders arranged in parallel and cast in one block, as well as a camshaft for controlling the exhaust valves. The Phoenix engine is later used both in road vehicles and in ships and airships.
