  • Henry Lawson founds Daimler Motor Company, Ltd., which acquires the rights for the use of the Daimler patents from British Motor Syndicate, Ltd. and starts production in Coventry in May the following year. This is the oldest automobile plant in the United Kingdom.

  • Dr Friedrich Hermann Wölfert, pioneer of motorised aviation since 1888, presents his non-rigid airship Deutschland at the Berlin Trade Exhibition. It is powered by a 7 hp / 5 kW Daimler petrol engine. During a further ascent at Tempelhofer Feld on 12 June 1897, the airship catches fire and explodes, killing Dr Wölfert and the mechanic Knabe.

  • Cannstatt-based Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft delivers its first truck to the British Motor Syndicate, Ltd. in London. The world’s first truck is powered by a 4 hp / 3 kW two-cylinder engine and designed for a 1,500-kg payload.

  • Two new Benz motor car designs based on the chassis of the Victoria and Vis-à-Vis models are sent to Paris from the Mannheim factory. The two-seater Benz Coupé is the first automobile with an enclosed body and at the same time the first motorised coupé. The Benz "delivery vehicle" with box body is regarded as the first van and is supplied to the "Du bon Marché" department store in Paris.
