  • The Mercedes-Benz 260 D (W 138), the world's first series-produced diesel passenger car, makes its debut at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Show in Berlin. Particular qualities of the innovative vehicle are its high economy and reliability. The new car models 170 V (W 136) and 170 H (W 28) are presented as well. Tributes are also paid to automotive pioneers Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler on the anniversary of "50 Years of Automobile Manufacture". New products in the commercial vehicle sector include the L 1100 light truck, the Lo 3750 chassis for medium-duty trucks and buses, the three-axle chassis L 10000 for 10-tonne trucks and buses, and the cab-over-engine bus LoP 3500.

  • The subsidiary company Daimler-Benz Motoren GmbH is established and begins construction of an aircraft engine plant in Genshagen, south of Berlin. Almost all of the buildings are completed by the end of the year. Series production of the DB 600 starts up in May 1937.

  • The LZ 129 "Hindenburg" Zeppelin airship embarks on its maiden flight. Powered by four Daimler-Benz DB 602 (LOF 6) V16 engines – each generating maximum output of 1,200 hp / 882 kW – it completes three trips to South America and ten scheduled flights to North America within the space of nine months, covering a total distance of 308,421 km.

  • Daimler-Benz concludes an agreement with the Cologne-based enterprise Otto Wolff for the delivery of Mercedes-Benz diesel trucks to China and the establishment and operation of an assembly, repair and production facility there. In March 1938 the 2,000th chassis of the L 2000 diesel truck model is delivered.

  • Rudolf Caracciola follows up his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on 13 April by also winning the Tunis Grand Prix at an average speed of 160.3 km/h in a W 25 750-kg formula racing car. This is the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows' final victory in the 1936 race season.

  • The 540 K (W 29) with more powerful 5.4-litre supercharged engine is unveiled at the Paris Motor Show as the successor to the 500 K. Also celebrating its premiere is the 230 (W 143), which is based on the 200 (W 21) and serves as its successor. The 2.3-litre six-cylinder engine develops 55 hp / 40 kW, 15 hp / 11 kW more than its 2-litre sibling.

  • Rudolf Caracciola sets five international class records and one world record in a fully streamlined car on the Frankfurt - Darmstadt motorway. Caracciola covers the ten-mile distance at an unprecedented 333.48 km/h from a flying start.
