  • The 320 (W 142) is presented at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Show in Berlin as successor to the 290 (W 18). Mercedes also unveils improved versions of the 230 (W 143) and 260 D (W 138), with a more spacious body, updated interior and broader track.

  • A test series of 30 Volkswagen vehicles – the first not built in single-piece production – are completed at Daimler-Benz. Production of the so-called VW 30 series, designed by Dr Ferdinand Porsche and also known as the Porsche 60, was commissioned by the Reich Association of the German Automobile (RDA) in July 1936.

  • The W 125 750-kg formula racing car, newly developed for the 1937 season, comes home with a victory in its first competitive outing: Hermann Lang wins the Tripoli Grand Prix at an average speed of 212.5 km/h to take his first grand prix victory.

  • Hermann Lang wins the final of the open-formula AVUS race in Berlin in a streamlined W 125 racing car, clocking an average speed of 261.2 km/h. This is not only a track record, but at the same time the highest average speed attained in a race – a record that would last until 1958.

  • Mercedes-Benz posts a double victory with Rudolf Caracciola and Manfred von Brauchitsch at the German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring. The Monaco Grand Prix on 8 August even ends in triple victory, as does the Swiss Grand Prix on 22 August.

  • In Mannheim the first units of the L 1500 light truck leave production. The Mannheim plant takes over production of this model from Gaggenau and also becomes a commercial vehicle plant.

  • The Italian Grand Prix in Monza ends in a one-two finish for Mercedes-Benz. Rudolf Caracciola wins the race, with Hermann Lang coming in second, and becomes European champion for the second time. Caracciola also wins the Masaryk Grand Prix in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on 26 September, although this event does not count towards the European Championship.

  • Dr Wilhelm Kissel, long-standing employee of Benz & Cie. and a member of the Daimler-Benz Board of Management since 1926, is appointed Chairman of the Daimler-Benz AG Board of Management. Kissel had been chairing Board meetings since 1930 and with the introduction of the German Stock Corporation Act now formally becomes Chairman of the Board.
