Heinrich Rößler and Albert Friedrich file a patent application for the Unimog after requesting patent protection for the basic vehicle concept on 21 November 1948. The two patents with the title "Farm Tractor" are issued on 8 December 1955 as no. 937 509 and 20 September 1956 as no. 950 430.

In addition to the saloon and ambulance versions, the 170 D becomes part of the sales range as a chassis with body front end, windscreen and floor assembly. With this step Daimler-Benz establishes the tradition of offering chassis that can be equipped with bodies for delivery vehicles, ambulances and funeral vehicles.

Export sales at Daimler-Benz AG reach DM 66.6 million – more than ten times the figure of the previous year and 13.3 % of overall sales. The biggest export country is Sweden with a share of 28 %. Brazil, which orders the delivery of 1,000 disassembled truck chassis as the first major export transaction after the war, occupies second place.
