  • Heinrich Rößler and Albert Friedrich file a patent application for the Unimog after requesting patent protection for the basic vehicle concept on 21 November 1948. The two patents with the title "Farm Tractor" are issued on 8 December 1955 as no. 937 509 and 20 September 1956 as no. 950 430.

  • The 170 S is available ex factory with a car radio as an optional extra. From August this extra is also available for the 170 V and 170 D models.

  • In addition to the saloon and ambulance versions, the 170 D becomes part of the sales range as a chassis with body front end, windscreen and floor assembly. With this step Daimler-Benz establishes the tradition of offering chassis that can be equipped with bodies for delivery vehicles, ambulances and funeral vehicles.

  • Car models 170 V and 170 D go into production in revised versions internally designated 170 Va and 170 Da (W 136). The improvements include more powerful engines, a more spacious body with a boot accessible from the outside and an improved suspension.

  • The L 6600 – the first newly designed Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty truck since the end of the war – goes into series production at the Gaggenau plant. The O 6600 bus chassis, whose body is fitted at the Sindelfingen plant, follows in its tracks one month later.

  • Export sales at Daimler-Benz AG reach DM 66.6 million – more than ten times the figure of the previous year and 13.3 % of overall sales. The biggest export country is Sweden with a share of 28 %. Brazil, which orders the delivery of 1,000 disassembled truck chassis as the first major export transaction after the war, occupies second place.

  • The first reconstruction phase at the plants of Daimler-Benz AG is now over. Compared with 1943, the Mannheim and Gaggenau plants have been 97 % reconstructed; the Untertürkheim plant, 80 %. The Sindelfingen plant has even been expanded by 51 %.
