  • The Unimog, delivered to customers with the Mercedes star on its radiator grille since May, is given the internal model series designation 401. A variant with a completely enclosed all-steel driver's cab is added to the model range, extending the appeal of the Unimog from its existing customer base – centred in agriculture and forestry – to include the industrial, commercial and municipal sectors. In November a longer-wheelbase version (402 series) is added.

  • Based on the Works Constitution Act, a Central Works Council is formed out of members of the councils of the individual plants and branches. Its first Chairman is Ernst Schäfer, Chairman of the Works Council of the Sindelfingen plant.

  • The Mercedes-Benz 180 (W 120) is presented to the press in Sindelfingen. It replaces the 170 Sb and is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car to feature a self-supporting body in "Ponton" form. By breaking with the conventional frame construction, the 180 marks the beginning of a new era in passenger car manufacture at Daimler-Benz. On 10 September the first 297 vehicles start out on a rally to the sales and service outlets . Sharing the stage with the 180 are the modified 170 S-V and 170 S-D models, the last development stage of the W 136 series. Equipped with the more spacious body of the 170 S or 170 DS, they succeed the 170 Vb and 170 Db in the model range.

  • Mercedes-Motores S.A., set up by Alfred Jurzykowsky in São Paulo, is renamed Mercedes-Benz do Brasil S.A. In April 1955 Daimler-Benz AG receives a 25 % share in the company's stock in return for the delivery of machines and the licence rights for the production of the L 312.

  • Daimler-Benz chooses a fire brigades' convention as the occasion to present the TLF 15/36 TA tank water tender, the first Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle to be fitted with a turbocharged diesel engine. The OM 312 A power unit develops 115 hp / 85 kW, 25 hp / 18 kW more than the naturally aspirated variant on which it is based.

  • The Mercedes-Benz 220 (W 187) is also offered as a Coupé. Based on the Convertible A, the two-door model establishes the ancestral line of luxury Mercedes-Benz coupés.
