  • The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W 113) is presented at the Geneva Motor Show to replace the 300 SL and 190 SL sports cars. This is the world's first sports car to feature the safety bodywork developed by Béla Barényi. Its hardtop has a concave roof line which leads to it being called the "Pagoda SL". The new SL is the first Mercedes-Benz car fitted with a dual-circuit brake system as standard. Another new product on show in Geneva is a version the 300 SE with 10-cm-longer wheelbase, which establishes the tradition of long-wheelbase S-Class saloons.

  • Mercedes-Benz unveils a new prestige car at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt – the 600 Grand Mercedes (W 100). • New model designations are introduced for the entire Mercedes-Benz truck range in place of the design numbers used since 1954. The L 338 thus becomes the L 1418, the L 319 D becomes the L 405. The last two digits indicate the rounded engine output; the one or two digits preceding them stand for the permissible gross vehicle weight. Accordingly, the L 1418 is identifiable as a truck with approx. 180 hp / 132 kW and a gross weight of 14 tonnes.
