  • Daimler-Benz presents the new L 206 D and L 306 D light vans at the Düsseldorf plant. These are based on the F 20 – F 35 Hanomag-Henschel models, but have some differences in equipment. This adds the light van segment to the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle range.

  • The new 350 SL sports car model (107 series) is presented to the international press in Hockenheim. It is the first SL model equipped with an eight-cylinder engine. With its horizontally arranged headlamps, large direction indicators and large ribbed tail lights, it shapes the style of future Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. The integral safety concept with numerous innovative details, including optionally available three-point inertia reel seat belts attached directly to the seat for the first time, sets new standards in vehicle safety.

  • At the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz win their class in a 300 SEL 6.8 AMG and take second place overall. Their racing touring car, affectionately dubbed the "red boar" because of its red paintwork and aggressive look, was built by the firm AMG, set up by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in 1967.

  • The 150,000th Unimog, a U 52 of the 421 series rolls off the assembly line in Gaggenau and is donated by Board of Management member Dr Hanns Martin Schleyer to the Wahlwies youth and children's village on 27 September.

  • The Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show. The technology and styling of the four-seater coupé from the 107 series is based on the 350 SL. Series production begins in February 1972.

  • In Indonesia, Daimler-Benz takes a 33.3 % holding in the Wanaherang-based assembly and production company P.T. German Motor Manufacturing and a 51 % stake in the sales company P.T. Star Motors Indonesia.

  • Mercedes-Benz presents the experimental natural gas bus OG 305, whose horizontally installed six-cylinder engine is not fired with diesel fuel, but very reasonably priced natural gas. This enables particularly economical operation and much lower exhaust gas emissions.

  • The Untertürkheim plant administrators move into the newly constructed administrative building at the Mettingen sub-plant. This completes the reorganisation of the Untertürkheim site: engine production is located in Untertürkheim, transmission production in Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, axle production and the administration in Esslingen-Mettingen, and component remanufacture in Esslingen-Brühl.
