The Mercedes-Benz SK heavy-duty truck series is voted "Truck of the Year 1990" and receives the award at the International Commercial Show in Geneva. The coveted trophy, awarded by trade journalists from 13 countries, is accepted by Helmut Werner, member of the Board of Management responsible for commercial vehicles and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (201 series) – like its predecessor produced in a limited edition of 500 units – celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. Also making an appearance is the Mercedes-Benz 300 E-24 with variable methanol/petrol drive system, whose engine timing automatically adjusts to the mixture ratio of the fuel components.

At the Turin Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveils the new 201-series 190 E 1.8 with 1.8-litre fuel injection engine, which replaces the 190 with carburettor engine in the range. Carrying an extremely reasonable price tag, the new model targets primarily younger drivers. The 200 and 200 T carburettor models also disappear from the 124 series by the end of April, leaving the passenger car range populated solely by models with fuel-injected engines.

In its first competitive outing the new Group C Mercedes-Benz C 11 racing sports car posts a one-two win. The Silver Arrow of Mauro Baldi/Jean-Louis Schlesser passes the finish line ahead of the car driven by Jochen Mass / Karl Wendlinger. The C 11, an all-new design, is equipped with a revised version of the M 119 four-valve V8 engine used in the C 9.

An electric vehicle based on the compact class makes its debut at the Innovation Market of the Hanover Trade Fair. It is equipped with a sodium-nickel chloride high-temperature battery. The Mercedes-Benz 190 Elektro serves as a test mule for different drive system variants and battery systems.

The one-millionth Mercedes-Benz van built at the Düsseldorf plant rolls off the assembly line. The former Auto Union facility took over van production from Sindelfingen in 1962. The vehicle in question, a 208 D minibus with wheelchair lift, is donated to the German Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The first contruction stage of the Daimler-Benz Research Centre in Ulm is officially inaugurated. At the same time, the foundation stone is laid for the second construction stage, which is to accommodate further laboratory buildings and a communications centre with seminar and lecture rooms.

Almost exactly one year since the first employees moved into their new offices, the new corporate headquarters in Stuttgart-Möhringen is officially unveiled with an open day for the local community. A total of 60,000 visitors stop by for a look around the office buildings, the central hall and the exhibition.

In Montreal, in the penultimate race of the season, Jean-Louis Schlesser / Mauro Baldi win in a Mercedes-Benz C 11 to take the drivers' title in the Group C World Championship. Jochen Mass is runner-up as in the year before. Mercedes-Benz had already captured the team title at Donington Park, UK, on 2 September, two races before the season's finale in Mexico.

At the season finale at Jarama, Spain, Steve Parrish in a Mercedes-Benz 1450 LS wins both Class C runs to take the European Truck Racing Championship in Class C with a clear points advantage. Thomas Hegmann is runner-up. Mercedes-Benz also takes the constructors’ title for the Class A and C.

Under the terms of a cooperation agreement, Mercedes-Benz and AMG Motorenbau- und Entwicklungs-Gesellschaft mbH based in Affalterbach are committed to working together in the areas of development, production, sales and service for passenger cars and passenger car parts. From May 1991, the AMG models supplement the ranks of Mercedes-Benz vehicles at the brand's sales and service outlets and dealerships.

For all diesel passenger cars Mercedes-Benz offers a complex emission control system in which an oxidizing catalytic converter specifically developed for diesel engines is combined with an exhaust gas recirculation function. This very efficient system is available as an optional extra initially for diesel cars with naturally aspirated engines, and six months later also for the models with turbocharged engines.

In Moscow, Mercedes-Benz AG and the Soviet bus manufacturer AVTROKON sign contracts agreeing the production under licence of the O 303 coach in the Soviet Union. The first coaches are scheduled for assembly as early as 1991 at the Golitsyno plant outside Moscow. The annual production target is set at 2,500 units.
