Mercedes-Benz AG and Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG form CTS Fahrzeugdachsysteme GmbH in Hamburg, in which the two partners hold an equal interest. Mercedes-Benz brings to the joint venture its Roof Systems Product Competence Center in Hamburg, Porsche its Roof System Development and Manufacturing operation.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan/USA, Mercedes-Benz presents the "AAVision", a concept design study of a four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle. This All Activity Vehicle (AAV) can be used equally well as recreational vehicle, family car, and off-roader.

In Freiburg Baden-Württemberg's transport minister Hermann Schaufler takes delivery of a Mercedes-Benz 1517 hybrid truck. When used in urban areas, the truck will be powered by an almost silent 46 kW / 63 hp electric motor. In rural areas the truck switches to its second drive system, a 125 kW / 170 hp diesel engine with reduced emissions and noise. The parallel arrangement of the two drives also permits combined operation with 171 kW / 233 hp.

The new light Vito van (638 series), crowned "Van of the Year 1996" a little earlier, is displayed to the public at the Geneva Commercial Vehicle Show, where the coveted award is presented. The refined trucks from the new Light Class also make their debut. The most important innovations are the OM 904 LA ECO POWER engines – turbocharged four-cylinder in-line engines with intercooler and three-valve technology, the first units of the new OM 900 engine family to be introduced. Other new products include the all-wheel-drive version of the Sprinter and a natural gas powered variant of the van, presented as a prototype with the designation Sprinter 314 G. Also designed for natural gas operation is the 1820 G medium-duty truck, whose 160 kW / 218 hp engine enables reduced exhaust and noise emissions compared with the basic engine with the same power rating. Mercedes-Benz AG and the passenger car general distributor National Automotive Company (NATCO) agree a joint venture and licensing contract, which is to cover the assembly of E-Class saloons in Egypt. The company created as a result of this agreement is the production and sales firm Egyptian German Automotive Company (EGA).

The production version of the Mercedes-Benz SLK (R 170 series) is unveiled to the public at the International Motor Show in Turin. The most striking feature of the sporty, compact two-seater is the innovative vario roof. When retracted into the boot, it still permits a respectable luggage carrying capacity.

rhenag Rheinische Energie AG in Cologne and Hermes Versand Service, a parcel delivery firm, receive the first prototypes of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter modified for natural gas operation and begin practical testing in everyday conditions. Equipped with the innovative sequential gas technology, the Sprinter has a range of around 250 km with six gas cylinders arranged underfloor.

The Research Division of Daimler-Benz presents another car with fuel cell drive at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. NECAR II (New Electric Car) based on the V-Class derives its energy from the controlled reaction of hydrogen and oxygen gas, in which electricity is generated. The weight and volume of the fuel cell have been reduced to such an extent that virtually the entire interior compartment of the car is available to passengers and their luggage.

Markus Oestreich notches up the first win of the season for Mercedes-Benz in the second run of the Super Race Trucks at the Autodromo di Santamonica in Italy. Since the start of the season the team has used the Evolution version of the Mercedes-Benz 1834 S race truck with a larger-displacement V6 diesel engine.

The industrial management of Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dornier GmbH (Friedrichshafen), a corporate unit of Dasa, is taken over by Fairchild Aircraft Holding Inc. (San Antonio, Texas/USA). This precipitates a joint venture in which Dornier GmbH has a 20 % and Fairchild Aircraft an 80 % holding. This step represents a retreat on the part of Daimler-Benz Aerospace from direct involvement in the regional aircraft sector after financial support for Fokker was discontinued in January.

At the 132nd and last Annual General Meeting of AEG, the decision is taken to merge AEG AG into Daimler-Benz AG with effect from 1 January 1996, after the transfer of operative business activities to legally independent entities.The Energy Technology and Systems and Automation Technology units are sold off and the Microelectronics Division (TEMIC), Rail Systems (Adtranz) and Postal Automation (AEG Electrocom) are directly managed by Daimler-Benz AG. The industrial management of the Diesel Engines Division is transferred to Mercedes-Benz AG.

The MB 800, a light truck for short-range distribution work with a payload of up to 5.4 tonnes, celebrates its premiere at the Aksaray plant of Mercedes-Benz Türk. Equipped with the OM 364 A four-cylinder diesel engine built in Turkey, the MB 800 is earmarked for the Turkish home market and the East European markets.

AMG supplies the official Formula One Safety Car for the first time at the French Grand Prix in Magny-Cours. The silver Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG makes an appearance whenever races are interrupted for a short period. Another vehicle of the same type also serves as official Medical Car and with Prof. Sid Watkins, the FIA’s Formula One Medical Delegate, ensures the fastest possible emergency medical aid in the event of injury to Formula One drivers or track marshals.

At the Mannheim plant Mercedes-Benz presents the V6 and V8 units of the all-new OM 500 engine family, which find use in the new Actros heavy-duty truck series and in buses. The particularly eco-friendly, economical engines work with the unit pump-line-nozzle technology and develop outputs ranging from 230 kW / 313 hp to 420 kW / 571 hp.

Under the name "Actros", Mercedes-Benz presents a heavy-duty truck series to the press which is a wholly new development and replaces the models of the SK heavy-duty class starting in October. Innovations include the powerplants from the OM 500 engine family and the electronically controlled Telligent brake system with disc brakes on all wheels.

The compact van Vito introduced in the spring is presented with an environment-friendly, locally emission-free electric drive system. A maintenance-free AEG high-energy battery designed for at least 800 charging cycles serves the 108 E as energy accumulator. As a small, compact and manoeuvrable vehicle, the electric Vito is especially suited to short-range distribution work and urban passenger transport.

With the market launch of the chassis with partial body variant, Mercedes-Benz makes a further addition to the E-Class 210 series model line-up. The only version offered is the lengthened wheelbase model, which - beginning with the chassis range of the 123 series - had become far the dominant version. The extended E-Class chassis (VF 210) are for the first time produced entirely in-house by Binz GmbH & Co. KG in Lorch, Württemberg, on behalf of Daimler-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz presents the O 405 NÜH hybrid bus, which features electric hub drive, a sodium-nickel chloride high-capacity battery and a low-emission diesel engine. The first four units of the environment-friendly low-floor bus take up regular service between Oberstdorf, Sonthofen and Kempten in January 1997. They are being tested in everyday operation as part of a pilot project initiated by the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Protection. The electric traction battery is used only for zero-emission, noiseless operation in downtown areas; in rural areas the 184 kW / 250 hp diesel takes over, functioning as a generator for the wheel hub motors and to recharge the traction battery.

The Actros heavy-duty truck series celebrates its public premiere at the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover. The Vario large-capacity van and the new O 550 Integro rural service bus series also make their debut. Other new models are the O 405 NÜL, a longer-wheelbase version of the proven low-floor rural service bus, and a natural gas powered variant of the short low-floor O 405 NK regular service bus. Also on display is the Innovisia bus design study with Active Body Control (ABC) active suspension and numerous other innovative features. With the Setra S 315 GT- HD, EvoBus presents the first high-deck bus from the combined-service family, which comes to be favoured by many coach operators as economical alternative. The 15-metre rural service bus S 319 UL also has its premiere, thereby establishing a new segment for Setra.

The Daimler Benz Innovation Prize is presented at the Mercedes Benz Museum to the two TEMIC employees who developed the so-called planar technology for semiconductor components. This basic innovation is used in automotive production for ABS control and engine management, reducing the size of components and production costs to a significant extent.
