  • DaimlerChrysler Services AG and Deutsche Telekom AG bring the agreed complete sale of debis Systemhaus to Deutsche Telekom to a conclusion. Deutsche Telekom AG takes over the remaining share of 49.9 % in T-Systems ITS (formerly debis Systemhaus AG) from DaimlerChrysler Services AG after the DaimlerChrysler subsidiary exercises a contractually agreed sales option effective 1 January 2002. The sale of the affiliate is to be completed by the start of March 2002. The company will then be wholly owned by T-Systems, the software company of Deutsche Telekom.

  • In the M 271 Mercedes-Benz presents a new generation of four-cylinder petrol engines with the innovative TWINPULSE system – a combination of supercharging, intercooling, four-valve-per-cylinder technology, adjustable camshafts and Lanchester balancer shafts. The 1.8-litre in-line four-cylinder is built in four variants from 105 kW / 143 hp to 141 kW / 192 hp and first sees use in the C-Class starting in June, and in the CLK and E-Class from the autumn.

  • At the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presents the 209 model series, the second generation of the CLK-Class, which will be launched in May. The most powerful variant is the CLK 55 AMG with a 270 kW / 367 hp V8 engine from the M 113 model series. Another innovation is the A 210 EVOLUTION, the 103 kW / 140 hp top model of the A-Class 168 model series.

  • The Freightliner Business Class M2, a new generation of medium-duty short-radius distribution vehicles, debuts at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. For the first time, Freightliner uses major assemblies such as engines and transmissions from the DaimlerChrysler production network as standard. The OM 900 family of in-line diesel engines come from Mannheim production.

The partners use a specially equipped Mercedes-Benz S-Class to demonstrate an extensive portfolio of mobile multimedia services, available for the first time through the use of the UMTS mobile broadband standard.

Built at a cost of around € 10 million, it expands the existing Mercedes-Benz customer centre and integrates the Maybach Studio within a total area of 2,200 sq m. The competence centre for the luxury car brand simultaneously serves as headquarters for the international Maybach sales organisation, with 25 sales centres in Europe, Asia and America.

  • The second generation of the successful Actros long-haul truck series debuts at the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is presents with many practical improvements in a facelifted version which, like the Actros, has its market launch in early 2003. The revised Sprinter variants with a permissible gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tonnes are equipped as standard with the active safety system ESP. The newly developed, extremely competent off-road Unimog range U 3000, U 4000 and U 5000 from the 437.4 series, designed for difficult assignments in trackless terrain, also celebrates its premiere. The successor to the heavy-duty Unimog 427 and 437 series, which was produced in Gaggenau until mid-year, rolls off the assembly line at the new Unimog production site in Wörth. Volkswagen will follow DaimlerChrysler’s lead in signing up to a research project with the Freiberg-based company Choren Industries GmbH for the production of high-grade biomass fuels. The two companies are looking to use this research project to gather early solid experience with renewable fuels before competition becomes an issue.

DaimlerChrysler will thus increase its share from currently 25 % to a total of 55 % and become majority owner effective 31 October 2002. Mario Illien, Liz Morgan, widow of company co-founder Paul Morgan, and Roger Penske then hold a 15 % stake each.

  • Upgraded generations of the S-Class (220 series) and the CL-Class (C 215 series) debut at the Paris Motor Show. Important innovations in the S-Class include the PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection system and the 368 kW / 500 hp 5.5-litre V12 M 275 engine with twin turbochargers, used in both the S 600 and the CL 600. Also premiered are the 4MATIC variants of the S 430 and S 500, as well as the C 240 and C 320. For the first time Mercedes-Benz is now offering the S-Class and saloons and estates in the C-Class with intelligent all-wheel drive. The model range in the E-Class (211 series) is expanded to include the E 200 KOMPRESSOR and the E 320 CDI, and in the SL R 230 series a 6-cylinder model makes its debut in the shape of the SL 350.   • DaimlerChrysler AG presents two new vehicles with fuel cell drives to members of the press gathered at corporate headquarters in Stuttgart-Möhringen. Starting in 2003 the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell, based on the A-Class, will be practically tested by customers in a fleet of 60 vehicles as part of an international cooperation in Europe, the USA, Japan and Singapore. In addition, testing of fuel cell buses based on the Mercedes-Benz Citaro begins in 2003. They will do service in demanding daily regular operation as part of the CUTE and ECTOS projects at transit companies in ten major European cities.
