PKW9000000121 204 series GLK, 2008 - 2012

204 series GLK, 2008 - 2012

Mercedes-Benz used the Auto China motor show in Beijing in April 2008 as a platform for the world premiere of the GLK. The model family enriched the emerging and intensely competitive market segment of compact, primarily road-going premium SUV models.

The striking lines of the GLK combined the current Mercedes-Benz design idiom with the typical advantages of this vehicle class in everyday traffic, such as the pronounced design clarity of the body or the very good all-round visibility combined with a higher seating position. The front view of the GLK was dominated by the radiator grille with its horizontal louvres, which had a different design in the "Exterior Sports Package" and "Off-Road Styling Package" equipment variants that were available upon request. The latter included black protective strips on the outside of the bumper as well as a simulated underguard.

The silhouette of the GLK was characterised by the tautly drawn roof, which was fitted with matt black roof rails as part of the Off-Road Styling Package or with matt-finished aluminium-look roof rails in the Exterior Sports Package. The wheel arches were muscularly modelled and, in conjunction with the Off-Road Styling Package, 17-inch 5-spoke light-alloy wheels filled the wheel arches as standard. As an option, 20-inch rims in a 7-spoke design were also available. The more road-oriented Exterior Sports Package, on the other hand, featured 19-inch 10-spoke wheels. If so desired, 20-inch rims could also be specified here, which featured five spokes in the "twin-spoke" design.

A rear roof spoiler, light units in the current Mercedes-Benz design, a load sill protector made of stainless steel as well as the two-pipe exhaust system with rectangular stainless steel trim elements for all engine variants characterised the rear of the GLK. Depending on the equipment variant, however, different highlights were set here as well: the Exterior Sports Package, with its chrome trim elements, was more geared towards road use, while the Off-Road Styling Package, with its robust black protective strips and simulated underguard, addressed the issue of suitability for off-road use. The short body overhangs as well as the increased ground clearance also contributed to the latter.

The interior of the GLK was just as strikingly designed as the exterior of the compact SUV. Spacious and comfortably equipped, the interior conveyed the feel-good ambience typical of the brand. Depending on the customer's wishes and tastes, the interior design could be individualised with the help of optionally available equipment packages. Stylistically, there was a choice between a more sporty, functional aluminium look and wood applications that emphasised the overall sense of cosiness. Upholstery materials included fabric, a mix of ARTICO and fabric, ARTICO alone and also leather, all available in several colours. Standard features included partially electric seat adjustment at the front as well as an axially and vertically adjustable steering column. The GLK's load compartment was configured to be very variable; the backrest of the rear seat could be folded down completely or in a 2:1 ratio, creating a flat load area of considerable length. The everyday practicality was enhanced by the standard lashing eyelets, hooks for shopping bags, a 12-volt socket and side-mounted load compartment lighting. For further ease of operation, the EASY-PACK tailgate, which opens and closes electrically at the touch of a button, was available as an option.

Also standard were electric windows all round, THERMATIC 2-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and also the Audio 20 system with radio/CD combination, integrated Bluetooth interface, a hands-free system and centrally located 5-inch display. In addition, the COMAND APS infotainment system familiar from other Mercedes-Benz model series was available as an option for the GLK models, with a 7.5-inch colour monitor, integrated radio, CD/DVD drive, DVD hard-disc navigation, telephone controls and Off-Road Menu, which could be optionally extended to include LINGUATRONIC voice control. Also available as optional equipment was a Rear Seat Entertainment System with two screens, radio remote control, two sets of radio headphones and connection points for further multimedia devices. Other options included, for example, 10-way electric seat adjustment including Memory Package or an electrically operated panoramic glass sliding sunroof.

In the design of the self-supporting GLK body, the focus - as with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars - was on optimum protection potential for the vehicle's passengers, improved pedestrian protection and comfort aspects such as low driving, rolling and wind noise. At the same time, the special requirements of off-road suitability had to be taken into account. In order to achieve these sometimes divergent goals, a complex body structure was developed that used, among other things, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels as well as special material- and design-optimised beams, struts, profiles and reinforcements in almost all body areas. The resulting highly stable passenger cell was complemented by particularly efficient impact energy-absorbing front and rear structures. To optimise pedestrian protection, the bonnet had particularly long deformation paths; in addition, the front bumpers were specially designed and their integrated impact absorbers were filled with a more yielding foam.

Extensive detail work resulted in a favourable Cd value of 0.34 despite the eye-catching lines of the GLK body. This not only had a positive effect on fuel consumption figures, but also ensured a low noise level in the interior in conjunction with numerous sealing, anti-drumming and sound insulation measures.

The safety concept for the vehicle's passengers was rounded off by complex restraint systems with up to nine airbags which, with the exception of the sidebags for the rear row of seats, were all part of the standard equipment. This also applied to the crash-active NECK-PRO head restraints for driver and front passenger. In addition, the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory protection system, which had undergone continual development since its premiere in 2002, was also available on request for GLK models, linking active and passive driving safety. It went into action as soon as the sensors of the vehicle dynamics control systems signalled either emergency braking, severe understeer or oversteer of the vehicle, or critical steering movements at high speed. In such cases, PRE-SAFE® activated, among other things, the driver's and front passenger's seat belt tensioners in a fraction of a second and closed the sunroof and side windows if necessary.

On the powertrain side, four engine variants were initially available for the new GLK, namely two petrol and two diesel power units. The GLK 280 4MATIC and GLK 350 4MATIC models were powered by V6 petrol engines from the familiar M 272 series. With displacements of 2996 and 3498 cc and power outputs of 170 kW/231 hp and 200 kW/272 hp respectively at an identical rated speed of 6000 rpm, these power units, configured in accordance with the Euro 4 emissions standard, provided superior performance with moderate standard fuel consumption of between 10.2 and 10.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The GLK 350 4MATIC in particular offered unusually high performance potential for this vehicle segment, with a top speed of 230 km/h and a time of just 7.1 seconds for the acceleration sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.

Powerful high-torque diesel engines were used in the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC models. The four-cylinder unit in the newly developed OM 651 diesel engine series, equipped with the latest common-rail technology and a displacement of just under 2.2 litres, was particularly economical and efficient. With two-stage turbocharging and an output of 125 kW/170 hp as well as maximum torque of 400 Nm, it gave the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC Blue EFFICIENCY a top speed of 205 km/h and enabled the model to complete the acceleration sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds. Two Lanchester balancer shafts located at the bottom of the engine ensured that the engine ran with as little vibration as possible. Already configured to Euro 5, the engine also boasted very favourable fuel consumption and CO₂ emission values of 6.9 l/100 km and 183 g/km respectively.

The tried-and-tested V6 in the GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC, equipped with exhaust gas recirculation, oxidation catalytic converter and maintenance-free diesel particulate filter, delivered 165 kW/224 hp. It thus achieved driving performance similar to that of the 3.5-litre petrol engine in the GLK 350 4MATIC. The average standard fuel consumption of the diesel engine, which complied with the Euro 4 emissions standard, was quoted as between 7.9 and 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

The familiar 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission took over the task of power transmission in all engine variants initially available for the GLK. Two drive programs were available: "C" emphasised drive comfort and economy, while the "S" mode offered a sporty setup with adapted driving strategy and accelerator pedal characteristics. A third "M" drive program was part of the optionally available Off-Road Engineering equipment package. It also allowed manual gear changes using shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel. Also part of the Off-Road Engineering Package was the DSR Downhill Speed Regulation system, which automatically maintained a pre-selected speed on steep gradients and - exclusive to Mercedes-Benz - could be varied at any time during the driving manoeuvre.

The central element of the drive technology was the 4MATIC system. The permanent all-wheel drive had a torque distribution between the front and rear axles of 45 to 55%. In conjunction with the standard driving dynamics control systems, such as the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, the traction control system ASR and the electronic traction system 4ETS, the self-steering characteristics were predictable at all times under all road conditions, with a slight tendency to understeer. Additional stabilisation and traction improvement, especially at low friction values between tyres and road surface, was provided by a so-called pre-lock clutch mounted on the central differential, which mechanically caused a variable torque shift between the front and rear axles as required.

The focus of the chassis development was on resolving the conflict of objectives that always exists with regard to the setup of an SUV, namely to ensure agile and comfortable handling on the road on the one hand and the necessary off-road capability on the other. With the help of the standard AGILITY CONTROL suspension, the selective damping system of which responded to a wide range of requirements, it was possible to achieve both a supple response in normal on-road and slow off-road use, and easily controllable handling in demanding road use or sudden evasive manoeuvres. In addition, customers could choose between the optional Off-Road Styling Package, which offered a rather soft suspension/damper setup, and the optional Exterior Sports Package, which offered a slightly firmer suspension design with a 20 mm lowering and stronger anti-roll bars. All six-cylinder models also had speed-sensitive power steering with variable steering power assistance as standard.

The wheel and tyre formats of the GLK models differed depending on the equipment configuration: part of the Off-Road Styling Package were 7.5 x 17 front and 8 x 17 rear light-alloy wheels fitted with 235/60 and 255/55 tyres respectively. If the vehicle was equipped with the Exterior Sports Package, the sizes were 7.5 x 19 or 8.5 x 19 wheels and 235/50 or 255/45 tyres . As an option 20-inch alloy wheels were also available. The standard scope of delivery for all versions included a tyre pressure loss warning display in the instrument cluster, which could be extended on request with the tyre pressure monitoring system RDK, which also drew wheel-selective attention to insufficient inflation pressure and creeping pressure losses.

The brake system of the new GLK models was equipped as standard with the latest generation of the ADAPTIVE BRAKE brake control system, which defused critical driving conditions within physical limits by means of active brake intervention and control of the drive torques and restored driving stability. In addition, all models were equipped with the BAS Brake Assist System.

As with all current passenger car series from Mercedes-Benz, extensive optional extras were also available for the new GLK, some of which were combined in packages and some of which could be ordered individually. Among the many other features on offer were the PARKTRONIC manoeuvring aid, a reversing camera and a rain sensor with two sensitivity levels. The Intelligent Light System ILS, also available as an option, including xenon lights that automatically adjusted the driving lights to the respective driving and weather conditions, was particularly conducive to safety. The range and type of illumination were individually configured for driving through bends or turning off, country road and motorway operation as well as for fog light operation.

To mark the market launch of the GLK, Mercedes-Benz launched a particularly attractively specified special model called "Edition 1". Its equipment included the Exterior Sports Package with additional 20-inch wheels, the electrically opening and closing EASY-PACK tailgate and also dark-tinted privacy glass in the rear area. The interior of the special model was upgraded with the Interior Sports Package and also featured black and white nappa leather seats from the exclusive designo range, an AMG multifunction leather steering wheel, a black roof liner, aluminium trim and the COMAND APS infotainment system. The "Edition 1" models came in calcite white as standard, but could also be ordered on request in any other colour available for the GLK. The "Edition 1" equipment could only be combined with the three available V6 petrol and diesel engines.

While the additional features of the "Edition 1" models - depending on the version of the infotainment system - were offered at gross list prices ranging from €9163 to €9520, at the time of market launch the range for the regularly equipped vehicles extended from €40,341 for the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY to €46,053 for the top-of-the-range petrol model, the GLK 350 4MATIC.

In spring 2009, Mercedes-Benz changed the model designations of two GLK models. The petrol-engined GLK 280 4MATIC became the GLK 300 4MATIC, while the diesel model GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC was now called the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC. Technically, everything remained unchanged, but for the petrol engine the new designation now reflected the actual displacement of the engine, while for the diesel this was even less the case than before. However, the 165 kW/224 hp version of the latter remained in the range only until spring 2010, when it was replaced by its successor with the same model name but a power unit with increased output of 170 kW/231 hp.

A rear-wheel-drive only variant of the GLK 350 was reserved for the North American export market and also entered series production in spring 2009. With more than 32,000 units built up until the 2012 facelift, the powerful petrol engine proved extremely popular on that side of the Atlantic.

The general model range of the GLK was expanded for the first time in autumn 2009. The entry-level model was now the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, equipped with rear-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. While the output of the four-cylinder OM 651 common-rail diesel engine, rated at 125 kW/170 hp with a capacity of just under 2.2 litres, remained unchanged, the differently specified type of drive resulted in further advantages in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions for this model. With average values of less than 6.5 l/100 km according to the NEDC standard and, depending on the equipment, CO₂ emissions of 145 to 157 g/km, the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY took on a leading role in its market segment.

By the turn of the year, additional equipment elements such as KEYLESS-GO became optionally available for the GLK. In addition, all COMAND infotainment systems now offered digital radio reception (DAB) as an option. For the interior of the GLK, there was also a choice of two-tone leather appointments from the designo line. From December 2009, occupant safety was enhanced by the standard installation of so-called pelvis bags for the driver and front passenger, to specifically protect the hip and pelvic areas. The Intelligent Light System ILS, available as an option, was supplemented with LED daytime running lights.

In the same month, an AMG Exterior Sports Package became available as an extension of the familiar Exterior Sports Package. It gave the exterior of the GLK an even sportier look with AMG-look front and rear aprons, a radiator grille with two chrome louvres, side skirts painted in the body colour, a chrome protective strip and 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with 235/45 front and 255/40 rear tyres.

The next new model to join the range, in spring 2010, was the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY. The 2.2-litre diesel unit from the OM 651 engine series was particularly powerful here: the common-rail unit, which already complied with the Euro 5 emissions standard, delivered 150 kW/204 hp at 4200 rpm and impressive maximum torque of 500 Nm at 1600-1800 rpm. The engine's pulling power was shown to particularly good advantage in combination with the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which came as standard. The performance figures for the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY were a top speed of 210 km/h and a time of 7.9 seconds for the acceleration sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. The fuel consumption and emission values achieved in the process, with a standard average consumption of between 6.1 and 6.7 l/100 km and correspondingly favourable CO₂ emissions, testified to the exceptional efficiency of the entire vehicle.

In autumn 2010, a new entry-level model was presented in the form of the GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which replaced the previous GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY in this role. The rear-wheel-drive version, also with a mechanical 6-speed gearbox, was equipped with a single-stage turbocharger and limited to a power output of 105 kW/143 hp. However, the restriction of the driving performance potential - top speed 195 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds - that went hand in hand with the power reduction resulted in only insignificantly reduced consumption figures compared with its sister model. The GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY consumed an average of between 5.7 and 6.1 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres in the standard measuring cycle. With its initial gross list price of €34,629, it nevertheless remained the most affordable way to enter the Mercedes-Benz compact SUV segment until the 2012 facelift.

In the case of the six-cylinder petrol engines, the offering was concentrated on the top-of-the-range GLK 350 4MATIC version in the last complete model year before the comprehensive overhaul. The GLK 300 4MATIC with 3.0-litre V6 producing 170 kW/231 hp, which was positioned below it, was from then on only built for export markets - albeit in large numbers of up to 40,000 units per year. The remaining 3.5-litre model benefited in spring 2011 from the installation of the M 276 engine generation introduced shortly beforehand. The newly designed V6 had a cylinder bank angle of 60° - in contrast to its predecessor M 276 with 90° - which led to optimised smooth running characteristics. Other features included a simplified camshaft drive via duplex chain and, in particular, the use of third-generation jet-guided direct petrol injection with BlueDirect combustion process and piezo injectors.

In addition to a significant increase in power from 200 kW/272 hp to 225 kW/306 hp, the transition to the ultra-modern, Euro 5-compliant M 276 also brought with it a reduction in fuel consumption of over 20%: Instead of the previous 10.8 litres, the GLK 350 4MATIC, which now carried the additional BlueEFFICIENCY designation, only required an average of 8.7 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which was used for the first time here, also played a part in the efficiency optimisation achieved here and was introduced a few weeks later in the other correspondingly equipped vehicles in the compact SUV family.

After the world premiere of the fundamentally updated GLK models in April 2012 at the New York International Auto Show, there were still just under two months to go before the production changeover at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. In total, more than 270,000 vehicles had already left the production facilities there. Up to this point, gross list prices had risen only moderately: the GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was now available as an entry-level model for €35,462. The biggest price jump was recorded by the top model in the range, which had in the meantime undergone a significant technical upgrade. The GLK 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY cost €49,266, almost 7% more than its predecessor when it was launched in 2008.

The top-of-the-range model with a six-cylinder petrol engine also proved to be the best-selling variant of the entire model family. In the period up to the facelift, around 80,000 units of the GLK 350 4MATIC were built, followed by around 70,000 units of the GLK 280 4MATIC or GLK 300 4MATIC, which was produced exclusively for export at the time. Also thanks to strong demand in certain export markets, the rear-wheel-drive GLK 350 ranked fourth in the production statistics up to 2012 with more than 32,000 vehicles. The GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY was the most popular diesel-engined model, with over 65,000 units sold. The versions with a six-cylinder diesel engine, of which a total of around 23,000 units were built, were much less popular. The same can be said of the rear-wheel-drive entry-level GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY models, which settled in the four-digit range but had also only been added to the range later.
