PKW4701 245 series B-Class Sports Tourer, 2005 - 2008

245 series B-Class Sports Tourer, 2005 - 2008

Mercedes-Benz introduced the B-Class from the T 245 series in February 2005 at the International Motor Show in Geneva. The B-Class was the second Mercedes-Benz series to be designed as a Sports Tourer: It was a unique class of vehicle that combined the benefits of familiar car concepts with features from sport saloons, estates, MPVs and SUVs. Like the A-Class from the 168 and 169 series, the B-Class was structured according to the sandwich floor principle, which consisted of placing the engine and transmission partly in the front of and partly underneath the passenger compartment. Mercedes-Benz unveiled

the B-Class in June 2005 with the tagline: "A new dimension of Mercedes. The B-Class." The launch was accompanied by a multimedia campaign with a strong web presence that included free music and audiobooks in MP3 format.

Mercedes-Benz had already introduced the Compact Sports Tourer "Vision B" at the Paris Motor Show in 2004. The prototype included many of the features that would be later fitted in the B-Class. The "Vision B" was based on the sandwich floor principle, meaning that the engine and transmission were placed partly in the front of and partly underneath the passenger compartment. Despite its small size, the passenger compartment offered the same space as luxury saloons and estates. The vehicle was powered by a 4-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 103 kW (140 hp) and a torque rating of 300 Nm that consumed less than 6 litres of diesel per 100 km and produced exhaust emissions below the Euro 4 emissions standard. A diesel particulate filter was fitted. Mercedes-Benz targeted the compact Sports Tourer at the young and middle-aged who enjoyed life to the full.

The B-Class from the T 245 series presented at the International Motor Show in Geneva was the first vehicle in the series to communicate the concept of sports touring. The next Mercedes-Benz model to follow in its footsteps was introduced shortly after: A few weeks after the T 245 Compact Sports Tourer was introduced, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new R-Class from the W 251 series as a Grand Sports Tourer at the New York International Auto Show.

This B-Class targeted a young market segment: The Sports Tourer incorporated the demands of modern people for a spacious car with excellent comfort, great functionality, and outstanding design that was fun to drive. The B-Class was a touring car as well as a family and leisure car that was dynamic and stunning at the same time.

The space-saving layout of the engine and transmission partly in the front of and partly underneath the passenger compartment made the B-Class as spacious as larger saloons and estates despite its small size. The body had a length of 4,270 mm, which corresponded to the dimensions of compact cars. The passenger compartment in the 245 series outclassed same-sized cars in the segment in all of the comfort-relevant dimensions: shoulder room, legroom and headroom. Passengers in the back benefited from the long wheelbase (2778 mm), which created a distance between the seats and legroom that almost equalled the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The B-Class also reached new levels of variability and load capacity. The height-adjustable load surface, an asymmetrically split, foldable and removable back seat and a removable front passenger seat (optional) quickly transformed the Compact Sports Tourer from a comfortable touring car into a practical van. Based on the position and installation status of the seats, the load capacity increased from 544 litres to 2245 litres (without back seats and front passenger seat), which corresponded to the load capacity of a luxury estate. The maximum load length was 2.95 metres.

The B-Class was powered by high-torque CDI diesel engines and state-of-the-art petrol engines. The engine range met the requirements of the Sports Tourer concept for superior driving performance and fun, and consisted of six 4-cylinder engines with an output ranging from 70 kW (95 hp) to 142 kW (193 hp): The B 180 CDI with 80 kW (109 hp), the B 200 CDI with 103 kW (140 hp), the B 150 with 70 kW (95 hp), the B 170 with 85 kW (116 hp), the B 200 with 100 kW (136 hp), and the top-of-range B 200 TURBO with 142 kW (193 hp).

The B 200 TURBO was introduced with a new 2 litre 4-cylinder engine. Thanks to the turbocharger and intercooling, it developed a maximum torque of 280 Nm starting at 1800 rpm and kept it at a constant level all the way up to 4850 rpm. The powerful Compact Sports Tourer accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, did a short sprint from 80 km/h to 120 km/h in fifth gear in 7.3 seconds and reached a top speed of 225 km/h.

The diesel range of engines was headed by the B 200 CDI, which stood out with a formidable torque rating of 300 Nm. This new turbo diesel with common-rail direct injection accelerated the B-Class from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and in 10.0 seconds from 80 km/h to 120 km/h (in fifth gear). The B 200 CDI reached a top speed of 200 km/h and, despite such outstanding performance, fuel consumption remained below 6 litres: 5.6 litres per 100 km (combined consumption). All of the B-Class diesel versions were fitted with a maintenance-free particulate filter and met the strict Euro 4 emissions standard.

Mercedes-Benz equipped the new B 200 TURBO and the B 180 CDI and B 200 CDI with 6-speed transmissions. All of the engine versions in the B-Class could be optionally equipped with the new, stepless automatic transmission AUTOTRONIC.

Innovative suspension technology provided for a balanced combination of agility, safety and comfort: The electromechanical power steering used an electric motor to power the steering irrespective of the vehicle's speed. This increased the power in the steering at lower speeds, making parking and manoeuvring much easier. The spherical parabolic spring rear axle, another Mercedes-Benz innovation, contributed significantly to the stable, sporty and precise handling of the B-Class as well as to its high ride comfort.

The enhanced Electronic Stability Program ESP® was enriched by a new function: The steering assistant STEER CONTROL. It worked with the electromechanical power steering and responded in critical situations by adjusting the power steering to help the driver stabilise the car. The new ESP® function supported steering corrections, providing the vehicle with better road contact when braking on road surfaces with asymmetrical grip.

Another unique standard feature in the compact sports touring car was the selective damping system that adapted the damping forces to the driving situation: When driving normally, a soft shock absorber setting guaranteed high ride comfort; when cornering dynamically, the whole damping force was activated to stabilise the car.

The patented space-saving sandwich floor principle was key to the safety concept the 245 series. Arranging the engine and the transmission in an inclined position partly in the front of and partly underneath the passenger compartment lengthened the front end's effective deformation zone. In the event of a major frontal impact, the drive unit didn't move backwards into the interior, but slid downwards along the inclined pedal floor panel. The sandwich floor concept also had significant advantages in the event of a side impact because passengers sat some 200 mm higher and therefore above the impact zone. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the B-Class provided typical Mercedes-Benz safety:

Two-stage front airbags, belt pre-tensioners in the front and on the outer back seats, adaptive belt force limiters, active head restraints, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points and new head-thorax side bags rounded off the standard occupant protection system.

Inside the car, the design and feel of the furnishings complemented each other, creating a sophisticated atmosphere that was also comfortable on long journeys. Air conditioning, four-spoke steering wheel with multi-function buttons, an armrest between the front seats, power windows with heat-insulating glass, and high-quality brushed aluminium trim on the centre console, tunnel and door panels were all part of the standard equipment. Mercedes-Benz combined additional design features that accentuated the sporty, elegant appearance or the sporty attributes of the new B-Class into optional Chrome and Sport Packages

Numerous high-tech systems already in Mercedes-Benz luxury saloons were now available for the Compact Sports Tourer. Optional features included the automatic climate control THERMOTRONIC, electrically adjustable front seats, leather upholstery and the COMAND APS or Audio 50 APS radio/navigation system. The standard-specification clear glass projection-beam headlamps were optionally fitted with bi-xenon technology and active cornering/light functions.

A new, panoramic louvred sunroof gave passengers in the new B-Class a special open-air experience and contributed to the light, friendly atmosphere inside the compact sports tourer when closed. The roof opening was two-thirds larger than that of a conventional sliding sunroof. A fixed panorama sunroof with a grey-tinted, 0.6 m² glass panel could be chosen as an alternative.

The B-Class also had fantastic multimedia equipment: Mercedes-Benz were the first automobile manufacturer to integrate Apple's iPod® in its cars. The user-friendly iPod® Interface Kit, which was developed by Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH, was introduced in the European B-Class in May 2005. The iPod® Interface Kit was later available for other Mercedes-Benz series. The intelligent iPod® Interface Kit was very easy to operate: The driver used the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel to browse the iPod® and control the volume. The central display in the instrument cluster displayed the name of the track or menu item that had been selected and the information contained on the MP3 player. This ergonomic solution enabled the driver to stay focused on traffic, which contributed to active driving safety.

Some 120,000 B-Class Compact Sports Tourers were sold in the first year of its introduction. Optional equipment packages were in high demand. In 2006, Mercedes-Benz added the Active Package, which incorporated the most popular options for the B-Class and made the car even more appealing. The package included a large panorama glass sunroof with manual roller sunblinds, cruise control, fog lamps, storage boxes underneath the driver and passenger seats as well as the AUX-IN interface (starting with Audio 20) to connect external devices such as an Apple iPod® and other MP3 players. The Light/Sight Package with rain sensor and self-activating headlamps were also part of the Active Package. These packages enabled B-Class customers to save some 30% on optional equipment.

In 2006, the B-Class was given the highest crash test score of five stars according to the NCAP rating (New Car Assessment Program). With this score, the independent testers underlined the importance of the Mercedes-Benz patented sandwich floor safety concept, which had proven itself a million times over in the A-Class since 1997 and in the B-Class since 2005. The 245 series had also been selected by readers of the magazine "Auto Zeitung" as best German mini-van and awarded the "Auto Trophy 2006".

In the following year, the renowned German institute for environmental research, ÖKOTREND, awarded the B 200 CDI and A 160 CDI the Car Environment Certificate (Auto-Umwelt-Zertifikat). Both Mercedes-Benz vehicles performed way above average in all categories. According to the institute, they not only had excellent fuel consumption and exhaust/noise emissions, but also stood out with their environmentally friendly production processes, choice of materials and logistics. According to ÖKOTREND, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class stood out with its "high variability, spaciousness and impressive life cycle assessment." The B 200 CDI's drivetrain received particularly high praise from ÖKOTREND: "The 140 hp diesel engine is equipped with a particulate filter. The drivetrain's high torque of 300 Nm generated at 1600 rpm catered to a relaxed driving style and early upshifting, which results in an actual fuel consumption of 6 litres per 100 km. Overall, the Mercedes B 200 CDI deserves a very good environmental score." The institute also praised the high environmental standards that are par for the course at Mercedes-Benz.

In May 2007, the B-Class was voted Germany's "Company car of the year 2007" in the MPVs category. In a total of nine categories, fleet managers from large and mid-sized companies evaluated vehicle handling, costs, comfort, functionality and design in over 1500 test drives. At this time, Mercedes-Benz had produced and delivered over 250,000 vehicles from the 245 series. The main market for the B-Class was Germany with a share of one-third of the company's global turnover, followed by Italy, France, Japan and Spain. Most of the B-Class customers chose a diesel version, every third customer a B 180 CDI, and another 20% a B 200 CDI.

In March 2008, three years after the B-Class had entered production, Mercedes-Benz introduced the facelifted generation of the 245 series.
