    Dr Friedrich Hermann Wölfert, pioneer of motorised aviation since 1888, presents his non-rigid airship Deutschland at the Berlin Trade Exhibition. It is powered by a 7 hp / 5 kW Daimler petrol engine. During a further ascent at Tempelhofer Feld on 12 June 1897, the airship catches fire and explodes, killing Dr Wölfert and the mechanic Knabe.
