  • Description

The first competitive outing of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-LM racing sports car in the FIA GT Championship at the Hockenheimring ends with a one-two win for Bernd Schneider / Mark Webber and Klaus Ludwig / Ricardo Zonta.

In the course of the racing season 1998 the CLK-GTR is replaced by the CLK-LM which was originally developed for the 24 hours of Le Mans. The new GT touring racer is to a great extent based on its predecessor and looks very much alike in terms of outer design, but it has a 5.0 litre V8 engine with a maximum speed of 360 km/h (224 mph) instead the V12. All in all, this season is extremely successful: Klaus Ludwig wins the FIA GT championship in 1998 with CLK-GTR and CLK-LM. AMG Mercedes also wins the top spot of the manufacturers’ ranking.
