This 500 K (W 29) special roadster is an early version; the spare wheels in the rear are not yet integrated into the bodywork. With the compressor activated, the eight-cylinder in-line engine performs 160 hp/118 kW with a displacement of 5,018 cubic centimetres. With rather similar equipment, the 540 K has a significantly higher output. The eight-cylinder in-line engine has a displacement of more than 5,401 cm³. Performance is enhanced and amounts to 180 hp/132 kW with a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph). Partly synchronised four- or five-speed gearboxes with a semi-automatic gearshift transmit power to the rear wheels, which are mounted to a state-of-the-art swing axle, suspended by coil springs. The front axle has coil springs as well. All four wheels are retarded using hydraulic brakes with vacuum support.
