    Mercedes-AMG GmbH presents a whole series of new sporty high-performance models. The most powerful SL to date is the SL 73 AMG, equipped with a 386 kW / 525 hp 7.3-litre V12 engine from the M 120 series; the S 55 AMG, SL 55 AMG and G 55 AMG models have a 5.5-litre V8 unit from the M 113 series that develops up to 265 kW / 360 hp.

In 1997 AMG presents the newly developed 5.5 litre, eight-cylinder engine with 260 kW/ 354 hp, three-valve technology and twin ignition. Initially the M 113 provides superb drive in the E 55 AMG, but within a short while the engine – with slightly altered performance parameters – also powers other AMG high-performance vehicles, such as the ML 55 AMG, SL 55 AMG, S 55 AMG, CL 55 AMG and the G 55 AMG. With 255 kW/347 hp and 510 Newton-meter of torque it even provides unparalleled dynamic handling at the highest level for the compact models C 55 AMG, CLK 55 AMG coupe and cabriolet as well as the SLK 55 AMG.

The AMG high power engine is a detailed basic modification of the 290 kW/394 hp engine M 120 out of the SL 600 as well as the transmission. A stroke of 80.2 millimeters, a cylinder bore of 92.4 millimeters delivers a considerable volume of 7,291 cubic centimeters. It develops an enormous torque of 750 Newtonmeters at 4000 revs/min. Throughout the entire speed range, more than 600 Newtonmeters are at avail.
