Workaday testing of hybrid bus

  • Date
    August 1996
  • Description
Mercedes-Benz presents the O 405 NÜH hybrid bus, which features electric hub drive, a sodium-nickel chloride high-capacity battery and a low-emission diesel engine. The first four units of the environment-friendly low-floor bus take up regular service between Oberstdorf, Sonthofen and Kempten in January 1997. They are being tested in everyday operation as part of a pilot project initiated by the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Protection. The electric traction battery is used only for zero-emission, noiseless operation in downtown areas; in rural areas the 184 kW / 250 hp diesel takes over, functioning as a generator for the wheel hub motors and to recharge the traction battery.
