After school, this Frenchman, who was born in Moissac, trained as a mechanic in his father's company. In Paris, he attended the courses of well-known engineers such as Gustave Chaveau and Aimé Witz and subsequently designed a small V-engine with mechanically controlled intake valves. At the 1900 World's Fair in the French capital, there is even a carriage designed by him on display. At the end of that year, he took over the position of head of design at the French car manufacturer Clément-Bayard, but in October 1902 he moved to Benz & Cie. in Mannheim.

There, he designed and drove the Parsifal racing car, scoring a number of successes for himself and his employer, for example in the Huy kilometre race or the race for the Spa Cup in 1903. Barbarou left Benz & Cie. as early as 1904 and joined Delaunay-Belleville in Greater Paris as a design engineer, where he worked until 1914. Later, Barbarou took over as technical manager at the French car manufacturer Lorraine-Dietrich in Lunéville in the north-east of the country.
