Employed as a driving master at Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in Cannstatt, Bauer is considered one of the most gifted engine experts and racing drivers of his time. He achieved notable successes for DMG, such as victories in the car drive through South Tyrol in 1898 and the Nice - Gattières - Magagnosc - Nice tour one year later. On 30 March 1900, he had an accident at the Nice - La Turbie hill climb when he tried to avoid spectators running onto the track.

Bauer succumbed to his severe injuries the following day. His death was a tragic loss for DMG's motorsport commitment, which was inspired by Emil Jellinek. Bauer's accident ultimately initiated the creation of the Mercedes 35 hp, a completely new design by Wilhelm Maybach, whose innovative concept became the first modern car and made automotive history.
