Carl Benz also has his two-stroke gas engine with improved flame ignition protected in the USA. A patent with the number 316 868 is issued on 28 April 1885. As early as spring 1884, Benz tests a high-voltage electric ignition system on his two-stroke engines; this enables him to dispense with flame ignition and its complicated control mechanism.
