Born in Berlin of noble origins, von Berckheim successfully participated in car tournaments, hill climbs and reliability races from 1914 onwards. He won, for example, the rally at the Wiesbaden Automobile Competition in 1926, covering 460 kilometres in a Mercedes Model K in the prescribed eight hours of driving time, as well as the Baden-Baden Automobile Tournament in 1925 and 1926. Also in 1926, he won his class at the Ratisbona hill climb near Kelheim.
