Bergdoll is of German descent and was born in Philadelphia/USA as the heir to a brewery company. Like his brother Grover, he achieved a certain notoriety in the United States as a conscientious objector, whose case was even brought to President Theodore Roosevelt. In the course of the proceedings, he was even temporarily interned in a federal prison.

However, he also made a name for himself as a racing driver in Benz vehicles, recording victories, for example, in the Point Breeze Race on 18 June 1910 and in a 200-mile race in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park in October 1911, as well as second places in the Elgin Free Formula Race in August 1912 and in the American Grand Prix five weeks later.
