Born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, this Briton entered motorsport on two wheels via motocross events, earning a place as a test driver for the Williams-Renault Formula One team by way of the European Championship title in Formula Ford 2000 in 1986, Formula 3000 with some well-received successes on inferior machinery, and Group C sports car stints in 1989 and 1990. Blundell started for Brabham in 1991, Ligier in 1993 and Tyrrell in 1994.

A year later, he took the place of Nigel Mansell, who had left for US racing during the season, at McLaren-Mercedes and scored 13 World Championship points in 15 starts. For the following season, however, the team hired David Coulthard as a second regular driver alongside Mika Häkkinen, and Mark Blundell shifted his further career to the North American CART series, where he did well until 2000.
