Born in Cannstatt, Braun was initially an assembler at Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). From 1898, well-known car enthusiasts such as Emil Jellinek and the Viennese Theodor Dreher used him as a driver. Braun won the Semmering mountain race alone four times from 1903.

However, he was also scarred by his sport, surviving Wilhelm Bauer's accident in the Nice - La Turbie race in 1900 as his co-driver, for example, and also escaping with his life in a second serious accident in the Kaiserpreis race in 1907.
