This New Yorker became a professional racing driver out of passion: As a student at Yale University, he began to oppose the will of his parents, driving a Benz 150 hp in numerous races in the USA from spring 1909 and achieving a number of victories, such as at the Shingle hill climb in New Haven and the Fort George hill climb in 1909. At the Florida meeting in the same year, he set a world record over the flying mile and over ten miles.

In November 1910, he won the American Grand Prize in Savannah, Georgia by just 1.4 seconds in front of the French superstar of the time, Victor Hémery. A year later he switched to FIAT and won again. In 1912, he was killed while training for the American Grand Prize in Milwaukee when a tyre on his FIAT burst at high speed.
