Market launch of the C 220 CDI

  • Date
    December 1997
  • Description
The C 220 CDI with common-rail direct injection, presented in September at the Frankfurt show as the C 220 Turbodiesel, is introduced to the market. Thanks to CDI technology Mercedes-Benz sets new standards for efficiency: the C 220 CDI develops 92 kW / 125 hp from 2.2 litres displacement while consuming 6.1 litres of diesel per 100 km. In addition to boosted power output per litre displacement, utilisable torque is increased and pollutant emissions reduced. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder OM 611 is the first representative of a family of in-line engines with CDI direct injection. The 2.7-litre five-cylinder OM 612 and 3.2-litre six-cylinder OM 613 are used from 1999 in numerous passenger car and van series.
