Mercedes-Benz and the Treuhandanstalt privatisation agency sign a contract in Ludwigsfelde concerning the complete takeover of Nutzfahrzeuge Ludwigsfelde GmbH (NLG) and Entwicklungsgesellschaft für Kraftfahrzeugtechnik mbH (EGL). Under the contract, Mercedes-Benz AG, which holds a 25 % share in both companies, takes over Treuhandanstalt's 75 % share with effect from 1 January 1994.

Together with Enel, Italy's biggest energy supply company, Daimler AG launches another electric mobility project. In "e-mobility Italy" more than 100 electric automobiles of the smart and Mercedes-Benz brands are to be tested in everyday operation in 2010 in Rome, Milan and Pisa. Enel will make more than 400 charging stations available in the three Italian cities.

To adjust production to the difficult market situation, the company management and employee representatives of the Sindelfingen, Rastatt, Untertürkheim, Berlin, Ludwigsfelde and Hamburg plants agree a plant-specific reduction of working hours in the first quarter of 2009, which includes short-time work.

Daimler-Benz chooses a fire brigades' convention as the occasion to present the TLF 15/36 TA tank water tender, the first Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle to be fitted with a turbocharged diesel engine. The OM 312 A power unit develops 115 hp / 85 kW, 25 hp / 18 kW more than the naturally aspirated variant on which it is based.

Daimler AG, Russian truck maker Kamaz, the state-owned company "Russian Technologies2 and the investment bank Troika Dialog sign the contract in Moscow for an exclusive strategic partnership. Daimler takes a 10 % stake in Kamaz from Troika Dialog and gets a seat on the Supervisory Board and extensive rights as a minority shareholder.

The Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG chooses Rastatt as production site for the new A-Class, scheduled for market launch in 1997. Despite alternatives in France, Britain and the Czech Republic being considered up to the very end, the decision for Rastatt was made after intense negotiations with the Central Works Council and centered on a cost differential and savings of DM 200 million.

Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG, Essen, form a strategic alliance to develop and manufacture lithium-ion batteries. In this context, Daimler takes over 49.9 % of Li-Tec Vermögensverwaltung GmbH, a member of the Evonik Group. Moreover, the formation of an additional joint venture is planned. It will devote itself to the development and production of batteries and battery systems for automotive applications.

The first Mercedes-Benz Econic 1828 NGT semitrailer tractor is handed over to Kaiser's Tengelmann AG in Viersen, North-Rhine Westphalia. The supermarket chain tests the semitrailer tractor with the low-emission, economical natural gas drive in combination with an especially environment-friendly refrigerator semitrailer in daily delivery work.

Gottlieb Daimler takes out patents to protect first the "gas engine with hot tube ignition" and, a week later, the "regulation of engine speed by exhaust valve control". The two patents, registered on 4 and 27 August respectively under German patent nos. DRP 28 022 and DRP 28 243, provide the basis for the world’s first high-speed combustion engine.

As part of a charity auction benefiting the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the first unit of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is handed over at Christie's in New York to the car enthusiast with the successful bid. The highest bid in the "silent auction" that ended on 30 November was € 1.5 million.

Daimler AG and PURI tech GmbH & Co. KG sign a cooperation agreement covering the retrofitting of diesel particulate filters to Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles. From January 2009 PURI tech will supply filter retrofit kits that reduce emissions of soot particles by more than 99 %. These enable Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles in emission categories Euro 1, Euro 2 and Euro 3 to improve their label ratings for low emission zones, as well as their classification for motorway toll charges.

Entry into the Stuttgart trade register seals the incorporation of Daimler-Benz AG into DaimlerChrysler AG. Thus Daimler-Benz AG ceases to exist and the conclusive legal step towards the merger of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler takes effect. At the same time Daimler-Benz shares cease to be listed on the world's stock markets.

The Austro-Daimler-Puch-Werke Aktiengesellschaft is entered into the commercial register in Vienna. This officially completes the merger between Österreichische Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft AG, the former DMG subsidiary, with Österreichische Flugzeugfabrik AG and Puch-Werke Aktiengesellschaft, based in Graz, Austria. Passenger car production ceases in 1934. Thereafter, production is restricted to military and rail vehicles as well as bicycles and motorcycles.

For the first time in the history of Daimler-Benz AG, company sales exceed DM 2 billion. Export sales come to DM 965.4 million, 30 % more than in the previous year and equal to 44.9 % of overall sales. Exports go to 136 countries with a total of more than 2,000 sales and service outlets.

After four years in development, a new clear coat which is much more scratch-resistant than conventional paint owing to advanced nanotechnology finds use at Mercedes-Benz. The E-Class, S-Class, CL-Class, SL-Class, and SLK-Class models are the first cars in the world to benefit from this innovative paint, while other Mercedes-Benz model series will also feature the more scratch-resistant nanocoating from the spring of 2004.
