At the beginning of the 20th century, Degrais was a famous French car racing driver. For Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), he set the tone with his record-breaking drive at the Nice Week in 1902 with a 40 hp Mercedes-Simplex. On this occasion, he covered the mile with a standing start at an average of 83.2 km/h. in 1903, Degrais took part in racing events for a fixed salary of 10,000 francs paid to him by Emil Jellinek.
