Although Stanley Dickens was born in Färila in central Sweden, he is distantly related to the English novelist Charles Dickens. He himself tended to have the ability to drive fast, as he demonstrated, for example, in Formula 2 in the early 1980s, then in the Swedish Touring Car Championship and, from 1985, in the World Sports Car Championship.

While Dickens had to settle for third place in a Porsche 962 C in the 1988 endurance classic at Le Mans, he experienced the highlight of his career one year later when he won the 24-hour race on the Sarthe in a Sauber-Mercedes C 9 together with Jochen Mass and Manuel Reuter.

In 1991, he failed to match this success in a Mercedes-Benz C 11. The Palmer/Dickens/Thiim team had to park the car after 223 laps, while their team-mates Wendlinger/Schumacher/Kreutzpointner finished fifth. In the years that followed, the Swede's motorsport involvement steadily declined, and in 2001 Dickens officially ended his career.
