Born in Hamburg, Werner Engel studied law and initially took over his father's bookshop. In addition to his successful involvement as a businessman, he devoted his spare time just as successfully to touring car racing. In 1955, he clinched the title of European Touring Car Champion with successes in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and a 220 saloon car, including victory in the Adriatic Rally.

German Federal President Theodor Heuss presented him with the Silver Laurel Leaf for his services to sport. His co-pilot Horst Straub, an extremely resourceful mechanic from Daimler-Benz AG, also played a major role in his successes. He knew what to do in difficult situations. Engel met his fate when he suffered a serious accident on the Zandvoort race track during the 1958 Tulip Rally, the consequences of which he did not survive.
