- Description: An expanded and improved passenger car range is presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. In addition to the facelifted S-Class models (126 series) and the R 107 SL series, which are offered with a new engine range, the 124-series estate and the 190 E 2.3 and 190 E 2.6 compact class models (201 series) also make their debut. For all models with petrol engine a closed-loop emission control system with three-way catalytic converter is offered as an optional extra. The standard version is the so-called catalyst retrofit version, in which the vehicle is delivered without catalytic converter and oxygen sensor, but with the multifunctional mixture preparation and ignition system. Furthermore, the new ASD (automatic locking differential) and ASR (acceleration skid control) dynamic handling control systems and the automatically engaging four-wheel drive system 4MATIC are presented. The 1635 and 1644 heavy-duty truck models, fitted as standard with the new electronic/pneumatic gearshift (EPS) also have their world premieres. The new models are powered by the newly developed and especially economical OM 442 A and OM 442 LA V8 turbocharged engines. The standard O 407 rural regular service bus, presented for the first time, features the newly developed OM 447 h engine, which is noise-encapsulated as standard. Another new product is the small O 301 touring coach, whose chassis is supplied by the Swiss company NAW Nutzfahrzeuggesellschaft Arbon & Wetzikon, as is the chassis of the also new O 402 standard midibus.
