This Belgian from Brussels was considered one of the best racing car drivers in motorsport history. Four times, from 1958 and 1960 to 1962, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including a commanding class victory and third place overall in the last Mille Miglia held in 1957, always at the wheel of a Ferrari.

in 1955, as his career began to rise steeply, he successfully competed for Mercedes-Benz in the 300 SL production sports car. At the Mille Miglia, he took second place in the GT classification behind his brand team-mate John Fitch and seventh place overall. In August 1955, Gendebien underpinned his ambitions with victories in the Stella Alpina Rally and the Liège-Rome-Liège long-distance race. After his fourth Le Mans victory in 1962, the Belgian ended his successful active career.
