Born in Odenheim near Bruchsal, Hörner joined Benz & Cie. in mid-September 1906. There, he learned the ABC of racing from the two renowned factory drivers Victor Hémery and Fitz Erle. Hörner himself became an excellent driver, which he proved by winning well-known international events, for example the Werst race not far from St. Petersburg in 1913, the Zbraslav - Jíloviště hill climb near Prague in 1914, and the Tibidabo hill climb near Barcelona in the same year.

In 1922, he won the prestigious Semmering hill climb in a Benz 200 hp, having already finished the opening race on Berlin's AVUS the year before as class winner in a Benz 10/30 hp with a characteristic pointed rear end and an average speed of 118.1 km/h. He was also one of the first drivers of the innovative Benz teardrop racing car and achieved fifth place at the European Grand Prix in Monza.
