Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur win the car classification of the Paris - Dakar Rally in a Mercedes-Benz 280 GE cross-country vehicle. The team of Georges Groine / Thierry de Saulieu / Bernard Malfériol in a Mercedes-Benz 1936 AK all-wheel drive tipper finishes top of the truck classification.

In a long-distance drive from Los Angeles via Chicago to the auto show in Detroit, the smart fortwo and Mercedes-Benz E 320 BLUETEC prove their economy under everyday conditions. On the 4,400-km journey across the USA, the smart fortwo mhd consumes 4.8 litres of fuel per 100 km, the smart fortwo cdi only 3.9 litres, and the E 320 BlueTEC 5.8 litres per 100 km.

The "New Generation of Mercedes-Benz" is unveiled at Hockenheim. Alongside the new 2.8-litre models 280 S, 280 SE (W 108), 280 SE Coupé and Convertible (W 111) and 280 SL (W 113), a newly-developed mid-range series makes its debut, comprising the 200 D, 220 D, 200, 220 (W 115) and the 230 and 250 (W 114). The "/8" added to the model designation, which refers to the year the car was launched, serves internally to distinguish the new from the previous models. The mid-range series is popularly known as the "Stroke Eight" on account of this.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan/USA, Mercedes-Benz presents the study for an SL Roadster with an innovative panoramic glass roof that affords optimum all-round visibility even in poor weather. The 600 SL from the R 129 series features a mother-of-pearl white special finish combined with two-tone black-and-white all-leather upholstery.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan/USA, Mercedes-Benz starts the year 2003 with three world premieres and two USA premieres: On show for the first time will be the new Estate of the E-Class model series 211, the twelve-cylinder SL 600 sports car (model series R 230) and the F-Cell fuel cell vehicle based on the A-Class. In addition, the new 4MATIC models of the C-Class (model series 203) and S-Class (model series 220) will be launched in North America.

The upgraded SLK models of series R 171 make their debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan/USA. The two studies, "Vision GLK FREESIDE" and "Vision GLK TOWNSIDE", also celebrate their world premiere. They preview a compact SUV model which will come out on the market in the autumn as the GLK. The hybrid vehicle studies "S 300 BLUETEC HYBRID" and "ML 450 HYBRID" have their US premiere.

Daimler-Benz opens the "Safety Made Visible" exhibition in Stuttgart. For the first time the company presents the achieved safety level and current trends in traffic safety to a broad audience. After its launch in Stuttgart, the exhibition is staged in 15 other German cities and 13 European locations.

Helmut Werner, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, states at a press conference in Stuttgart that Mercedes-Benz will undertake a far-reaching realignment of its strategic product policy in the next few years. The plan is to evolve from a traditional luxury car manufacturer to an exclusive full-line supplier with high-quality vehicles in all market segments.

The Benz FX, a 9.6 litre four-cylinder engine with a rated output of 105 hp / 77 kW, wins the Imperial Prize introduced the previous year for the best German aeroengine. The 90 hp / 66 kW Mercedes DF 80 – a 7.2 litre six-cylinder unit – is ranked second, whilst Benz & Cie. also accounts for the third-placed engine.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, member of the Board of Management, announces at a press conference in Stuttgart the decision to concentrate passenger car development, previously spread among 18 locations, in Untertürkheim and Sindelfingen in future. The decision involves total capital spending of DM 800 million, the concentration of engine and transmission development at the Untertürkheim plant and the construction of a Development and Preparation Centre for passenger cars in Sindelfingen.

On the occasion of the World Mobility Forum in Stuttgart, Daimler AG hands over a Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid and a Mitsubshi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid to Deutsche Post World Net. With that the two partners give the go-ahead for a large-scale fleet test of hybrid trucks in operative business. At the World Mobility Forum, the Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid, a low-floor articulated regular service bus with hybrid drive, receives the first DEKRA Environmental Prize ever awarded.

DaimlerChrysler is awarded the Trust/OAS Award for Corporate Citizenship in the Americas from the Organization of American States (OAS) for its POEMA project. The prize is intended to reward in particular the ecologically compatible creation of jobs in the tropical rainforests of Brazil. Launched in 1992 with the help of Daimler-Benz AG, as the company was then known, the POEMA (Poverty and Environment in Amazonia) project in Belém, Brazil, is an example of successful, long-term cooperation between the University of Pará, local farmers, and the carmaker. Natural fibres are made from coconuts planted in the region, and these are processed locally into car seats, backrests, head restraints and sun visors.
