Peter Merck was born in Darmstadt, the son of the famous racing driver Ernes Merck and Wilhelm Merck, a factory owner who was also a car enthusiast and successful in racing. Following the family tradition, Peter Merck participated in the 1950s – as far as his professional workload allowed, as the then holder of the general power of attorney of the company E. Merck – in numerous motorsport events, including the Monte Carlo Rally, mostly with Porsche or Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
