Born in Wiesbaden, this trained engineer was one of the most famous German racing drivers in his time. He came into contact with motorsport at an early age and took part in numerous racing events between 1923 and 1935. In the process, he achieved a whole series of remarkable successes in Mercedes, Mercedes-Benz, NSU, Steyr, Bugatti and Auto Union, for example winning the class of racing cars up to 5000 cc at the opening race on the Nürburgring in 1927 in a Bugatti 35B.

Two years later, the Eifel circuit became the scene of what is probably his most important victory, which he achieved together with Max Graf von Arco-Zinneberg in a Mercedes-Benz SSK at the Nations' Grand Prix for sports cars. The duo finished the 508.7 km race with an average speed of 101.6 km/h. In 1929, Momberger also won the ADAC mountain record in Freiburg, his class at the International Klausen Race and the overall classification of the sports car class at the Automobilwoche in St. Moritz. At the Gran Premio di Monza, he saw the chequered flag in third place, also in a model SSK.

After his career had ended in the meantime, Momberger was reactivated by Auto Union in 1934, where he served as a reserve driver and later became head of the works sports department. In 1945, he went to Borgward in Bremen and moved to Switzerland at the end of the 1960s.
