This American from Northampton/Massachusetts had been participating in domestic sports car races as a private driver since the late 1940s. Initially driving different makes such as Simca, Allard, Ferrari or Porsche, mainly in endurance tests, he competed in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) championship from 1955 onwards in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupé.

In his very first year, he won the Class D championship title in superior style in the "Gullwing" and was able to defend the title in the following year. For the 1957 season, the Untertürkheim sports department supported him with the 300 SLS, a 300 SL Roadster specially modified for competition use. O'Shea returned the favour with a third consecutive championship title.

He remained on the racing scene in the United States until 1962, but increasingly sat behind the wheel of racing sports cars such as the Jaguar D-Type, Sadler Mk III and Aston Martin DBR 2.
