Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, Peter Dumbreck began his career in karting in 1986. He proved himself in Formula Vauxhall in 1996 and in the British Formula 3 Championship the following year, and immediately afterwards ventured into Japanese Formula 3, where he promptly took the title in 1998 with eight victories.

Mercedes-Benz signed Dumbreck up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999, where he achieved worldwide media fame as a result of his spectacular high-speed accident with the Mercedes CLR racing sports car, which fortunately was not serious.

In 2000, he continued to complete his first DTM season as a works driver in the Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes CLK-DTM team, started 2001 as a team-mate of Bernd Schneider for the D2 AMG-Mercedes team and was placed second in the final standings. In 2002, he competed again for Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes in a CLK-DTM.

After a frustrating season, he switched to Opel the following year. There, he was by far the most successful driver in the team, yet it was only enough for seventh place in the overall standings. From 2005, he continued his career in Japanese GT racing.

From 2006 to 2019, he drove for the Falken Motorsports team, where he achieved respectable results in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
