Born in Livorno, Tuscany, and raised in Britain, Resta began racing as early as 1907 and quickly made a name for himself in Mercedes as a racing and record-setting driver. His successes on the high-speed track at Brooklands, south of London, in particular went down in the annals. In the first year of his career, for example, he finished third in the inaugural race there, the Montagu Cup, in a Mercedes 120 hp racing car, a success he was able to repeat in 1908. In the same year, he set a new record of 154 km/h over the half mile.

in 1915, Resta emigrated to the United States and took American citizenship. In the new environment, his racing successes continued seamlessly. Just one year later, he won the National Championships organised by the American Automobile Association (AAA), during which he won the most important races, such as the Indy 500, which was only held over 300 miles that year, and the Vanderbilt Cup Race in mid-November, both in Peugeots. During his comeback, Resta, who had just turned 40, was killed in a new record attempt at Brooklands after a tyre blew out on his Sunbeam.
