As a fitter, this Swabian from Möglingen joined Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in October 1896 and single-mindedly pursued his professional development. On 1 January 1900, he was already a master in racing and passenger car construction. By this time, he had already gained his first experience of motor racing competition, but it was not until 1906 that he took part in numerous races as a regular works driver for DMG.

Salzer went on to become one of the most notable Mercedes drivers of his era with records at the Semmering races in 1908, 1909 and 1924, the Zbraslav - Jíloviště hill climb in 1921, 1922 and 1924 and a third place at the Grand Prix de l'A.C.F. 1914 in Lyon. In 1924, Salzer ended his active motorsport career, but remained loyal to DMG and Daimler-Benz AG until the end of his professional life.
