This moustachioed Briton was a well-known motorist and racing driver of his era. Emil Jellinek engaged him as a driver in motorsport competitions and hoped that Stead's successes in the new Mercedes cars would provide impetus for opening up the English market. The Briton indeed enhanced the reputation of the up-and-coming brand when, at the Nice Week on 7 April 1902, despite fog, he completed the 15.5-kilometre, winding Nice - La Turbie hill climb in 16:38 minutes in his Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp, one and a half minutes faster than Wilhelm Werner the year before.
