Born in Königsfeld, not far from Villingen-Schwenningen, Thum joined Benz & Cie. in Mannheim on 21 April 1887, where he was one of the first "instructors for the guidance and treatment of automobiles". In the long-distance drive Paris - Bordeaux - Paris over 1178 kilometres organised in June 1895, he took fifth place together with Fritz Held in a Benz entered by the importer Emile Roger. Seven years later, he won the second Königstuhl hill climb near Heidelberg, also in a Benz. In 1904, Thum had a fatal accident on a trip to the Odenwald.
